THE FUNK JAZZ KAFE

jason-secret-agent2.jpg

Jason Orr, producer of the legendary FunkJazz Kafé®, has recently branched his vision for marketing Soul artists to a new level at the right time. You can say it’s more of a Spike Jonze meets Spike Lee approach to video and film-making. Orr believes his videos for Soul artists with followings are simply “ visual expressions of an artists’ spirit and intent of a song, adding a broader dimension to the music. Especially music that would have never gotten a video budget from a label nor been a “single” at all. The Soul audience usually liked the “album” tracks too. So these are visual soundscapes capturing some of the greatest Soul artists of modern times.”

Dionne Farris “Baggage”
First short film from Dionne Farris’ video album “Remember My Name - Vol. 1″. These are songs from a new collection that will be introduced only through short film videos. Go to www.myspace.com/dionnefarris to purchase/ download “Baggage”. Song co-written by Van Hunt. Directed by J. Orr for FunkJazz Kafé® Films. (Peep the comments)

Omar “Syleste”
This has not been done before. Omar Lye Fook performing “Syleste”, in a rare performance within a performance of one of his many classic … all » sing-along tunes from his fifth … all » album, Best By Far. This short film/video was produced by Omar and Jason Orr for FunkJazz Kafé® - Life Arts Films. It’s great that we no longer have to wait to see a visual for our musical icons with soulful songs. First Lou Pearlman (http://www.nypost.com/seven/10022007/gossip/pagesix/pagesix.htm), now Chris Stokes with R&B “boy band”, B2K. What frat are these guys in? Are we seeing a pattern. How many more are there out there that are afraid to speak. I applaud the brothers for bringing thier issue to surface. Peep these videos and see for yourself. How is it that the older brother, Ricky Romance, hasn’t recanted his allegations? Sounds to me that Raz B was paid off or something. He was very serious when he had Chris Stokes on the phone and Chris was stating that he “doesn’t do THAT anymore”. Check out the comments on the “apology” video. Let us know what you think.

Theme: RIP Ike Turner

ike-turner.jpg

Just think about it. If Ike had not gain the reputation of an abuser, he would’ve been known for being a great Rock & Roll pioneer and Hall Of Famer. Here’s a video of Ike rehearsing in his living room. You can easily hear Rock & Roll roots in him. Here’s his bio for our younger readers.

REMEMBERING IKE TURNER

IKE”S BIO

2006 blessed Ike Turner with his first GRAMMY, in 35 years, as the winner for Best Traditional Blues Album; his 2nd consecutive Grammy Nomination (’01/’06) for this category. 1971 brought him his first GRAMMY for Best R&B Vocal by Duo/Group (Ike & Tina Turner for “Proud Mary”). In 1991 Ike Turner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his act, Ike & Tina Turner. In 2001 Turner full-tilt boogied throughout his multi-nominated come-back album, “Here and Now”. His Grammy Winner, “Risin’ with the Blues”, is again consistent with big-group arrangements, unique lyrics, and sizzling solos. Amazingly, “Here & Now”, was his first commercial release in 23 years, receiving rave critical acclaim. His follow up CD, “Risin’ with the Blues”, proved he could “take you higher”. Radio action in 2006-07 shows chart movement in multiple formats: Blues, AAA Alternative, and College Jazz. Turner’s European appeal also continues to rise; bolstered by his year-end, show-topping set in the 47-show tour Night of the Proms. Supported by a 72-pc. Orchestra, 40-pc. Choir, a backing Rock-band, a Power Vocal-trio, and Lyrica Garrett as lead vocal, Turner turned the rock-act-plus-orchestra romp into a frenzy. In other awards success for his 2001 Hit CD, the W.C. HANDY BLUES AWARDS heralded “Here and Now” as a masterpiece. It was lauded with 2002 COMEBACK ALBUM OF THE YEAR AWARD and Turner also received nominations for Blues Entertainer, Soul/Blues Male Artist, and Soul/Blues Album of the Year.2001 marked the Golden Anniversary of a GOLD Record from an Era when Fifty-thousand 45’s was a BIG Seller. That 500K-selling Single cut the edge of a new ground-breaking style, & NY deejay Alan Freed christened it: ROCK & ROLL. Sam Phillips, Sun Studios founder, tagged that Billboard #1 R&B Smash as the very first “Rock & Roll Recording”. Every hell-raiser, hip-shaker, and hit-maker owes a nod to that teenager recognized by Rock historians as the “Father of Rock & Roll”. That Billboard bullet, “Rocket 88″, was penned by a 19-year old boogie-woogie piano boy and his back-up band, “The Kings of Rhythm”, for their first Sun Studios session in March 1951. B.B. King introduced the boys to Phillips. His lead vocalist and sax-man, Jackie Brensten was mistakenly credited with the song by Chess Records, who released it. But those that know Rock History know that Ike & The Kings were the real, original rockers toiling in the shadow of their own success. That kid is referred to by Little Richard as “The Man”, and B.B. King proudly echoes, “He’s the best band leader I’ve ever seen”. He is none other than the legendary comeback-kid, Ike Turner. Turner has re-established himself with his ‘01 & ‘06 albums as a serious world-title holder; and proved why the hip-hop generation calls him “Ike Turner, the original mic-burner”. Ever-the-innovator never-the-duplicator, Turner ushers in a new style/trend in 2007, just as he did in 1951: Blues on top and Hip-Hop on bottom, a/k/a “Blues-Hop”. Turner says the rhythm and dance steps that ride today’s hip-hop grooves are as contagious as the skillet-hot Rhythm and Blues moves of the 1940’s that he grew up on. It’s time to mix it up. He recorded his first Blues-Hop track, “Safe Sex” in 2001, but his label wasn’t ready for it. Now, the tongue-in-cheek, blues-hopper “Gimme Back That Wig” makes it to the street in 2006. With the danceable Hip-Hop grooves and the soulfulness of a true Blues feel, Turner’s new hybrid style is guaranteed to groove music fans the world over, body and soul. Turner is currently scorching tracks for his anticipated “three-peat” CD.

Since everything we do musically has rhythmically been laid out and initiated by James Brown, we at FunkJazz Kafé® declare December 25th as “James Brown Day”. Hail to the undisputed King and Godfather of Funk, Soul, R&b and Hip Hop. To celebrate, we’ve post two favorites for ya’ll. One with the now legendary performance with Michael Jackson and Prince sharing the stage with the Godfather in 1983 (when “iconism” was at it’s best) and the other is a classic from his LIVE performances on Soul Train, where he was one of a few who really performed live. Peep how he hitchya in intro and brought it back in the middle of the groove. A Funk God. This man sounds like straight Georgia red clay. All true ATLiens know what I mean. Here’s question for you. Is there anyone harder than James Brown?

More James Brown Affairs Still In Disarray

Story courtesy of EUR Web http://www.eurweb.com/story/eur39536.cfm *The Associated Press checked in with the estate of James Brown one year after the entertainer’s death on Christmas Day at age 73, and all is not well.
Tomi Rae Hynie, a former backup singer who claims to be Brown’s fourth wife and the mother of his child, claims Brown wanted her to have his home in the western part of South Carolina, near the Georgia state line, but was locked out.

“Everybody says I’m being a drama queen and I’m a great actress,” Hynie said, alternately sobbing and joking during a recent telephone interview with AP. “All I did was cry and fall to my knees and faint a couple of times. Isn’t that how a wife is supposed to act at a funeral when she loses the man she loves?”
Hynie has since been in court trying to win half of Brown’s estate, which in October was reported by Forbes magazine to have earned an estimated $5 million in the prior year alone. But attorneys have said Brown’s accounts do not have the money they expected. One former trustee of Brown’s estate, David Cannon, has repaid $350,000 he was accused of misappropriating.
“When I married James he said it wasn’t because I was the prettiest girl in the room,” Hynie said. “He said it’s because I was a fighter. And I’m going to fight. … I’m going to fight because every night, when me and that man were in bed together, all we did was talk about this day and what I was going to have to do and how if I wanted it I was going to really have to fight for it.”

Buddy Dallas, Brown’s longtime attorney and adviser, has spent the year immersed in that fight. He met the entertainer in 1984 and was “with him through thick and thin from then until now.”

“Mr. Brown needed what I was able to give him and that was someone he could trust,” Dallas told the AP. “We laughed together, we cried together, we prayed together. And I was there for Mr. Brown’s children as well.”

But after their father died, Brown’s adult children moved to oust Dallas and two other trustees. Dallas resigned in November but now claims the judge handling the disputes forced him out and he’s trying retract his resignation.

“My only regret is that the children cannot accept the will of their father,” Dallas said. “He left household and personal effects to his children. He left a trust fund to educate his grandchildren. And then everything else on the face of the earth that he owned he left to the needy and underprivileged children of Georgia and South Carolina for educational purposes. And he named his three friends (Brown’s trustees) to carry out that purpose.”

As for Hynie, Dallas says she’s not Brown’s widow because she was still married to another man when she and Brown said their vows in 2001.

….AND DID ANYBODY HEAR ABOUT THIS? James Brown’s daughter charged with attack

If there are courtroom fireworks to be seen in the disintegrated marriage of the daughter of late singer James Brown and her husband, they’ll have to wait for the criminal trial, when she faces charges of allegedly stabbing him the day before her father’s burial.
On Wednesday — with the custody of their children, aged 5 and 8, on the line — the feuding Yamma Brown, 34, and estranged husband, Darren Lumar, 36, went into the courtroom of Fulton County Superior Court Judge Gail Tusan and reached a temporary agreement giving them roughly equal time with the children. There was no mention of the stabbing attack on March 9 that sent him to the hospital for 12 stitches in his arm.

There also was no mention of his wife’s attorney’s claim that Yamma Brown was just defending herself from an abusive spouse, or of Yamma Brown facing aggravated assault charges after her April indictment.
“This is not a Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown situation,” Lumar said after the agreement, referring to the tabloid fodder of those singers’ rocky marriage over the years.“We don’t want this in the media, I don’t like the media. I am extremely happy this turned out the way it did. Our kids are safe, and that’s what matters the most.”Lumar reiterated that he did not press charges against his wife following the alleged attack at the couple’s Tuxedo Court home in Buckhead, and he did not testify before the April grand jury. “I don’t know if I’ll be called as a witness,” he said. “But the Fulton County grand juries don’t indict people for nothing. They had witness and evidence enough to indict without my testimony.”Yamma Brown’s criminal attorney, Renee Rockwell, who was not at the hearing, said Brown had been abused by her husband over the years. “If he gets custody of the kids, he’ll be in line for the [James Brown] inheritance.t>

<p\><span\><b\> More James Brown drama</b\>
</span\><span\>Daughter arraigned in knife attack against husband; couple in midst of divorce case.</span\><strong\>
</strong\></font\></p\>
<p\>By Bill Torpy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
June 12, 2007 </p\>
<p\>The
death last year of music legend James Brown revealed to the world a
host of familial infighting. We know Prince is the man but this bullshit about not allowing his videos on the internet is silly to me. Prince has an extensive catalogue of videos and TRUELY FUNKY live performances that all his fans from the 80’s have on video. Dude should let these free videos (that he isn’t going to be able to sell anyway) out on the net so the world can see how much of a funk legend he really is. Nonetheless, here’s a glimpse of video from fans in Madison Square Garden at a recent Stevie Wonder concert. Hurry up and view because ya’ll know Prince is quick to have his “internet police” take video with him in it down. Enjoy.

Legendary Philadelphia Soul music producers, Gamble & Huff, will receive the 2007 “Ahmet Ertegun Award” (formerly the non-performer category). Peep this write-up we read courtesy of the Soul Patrol Newsletter (www.soul-patrol.net).

I was saddened yesterday as well when I read the announcement. I’m *not* surprised that Madonna got inducted - I mean, c’mon. You know that the industry as it stands today couldn’t wait to get Madonna inducted into the R&RHOF. Based on the long established rules, an artist has to have put out music at least 25 years ago to qualify. Madonna debuted in 1982 with “Everybody” (which, I’ll admit, I have featured on my site - it is a fun dance song to be fair) so she only JUST qualifies since we’re at the end of 2007.

Again, to be fair, she has had some fun dance music in her career (”Everybody”, “Burning Up”, “Material Girl”). However, she is not of the caliber of Donna Summer (or Chic who, if you’ll remember, were also nominated for induction along with Donna Summer). I thought for sure that either Donna Summer or Chic had a shot of being inducted. I mean, and I also mentioned this on my site’s blog area, Donna Summer helped define the face of disco from 1975 forward beginning with “Love To Love You Baby” (I know she actually debuted in 1974 with a German release but in the U.S. her 1975 classic is widely regarded as her “debut”). Her evolving disco and dance music throughout the seventies, eighties, and nineties into the 2000s should have made her a shoo-in for induction. Unfortunately, today’s generation of listeners are more in tune to Madonna than to Donna Summer.

As for Chic, another prime example of today’s generation not appreciating past legends. Nile Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards crafted sophisticated disco and funk not only for their own band (”Le Freak”, “Dance, Dance, Dance”, “Good Times”, “I Want Your Love”, “Chic Mystique”) but for others including Sister Sledge (”We Are Family”, “He’s The Greatest Dancer”), Diana Ross (the entire 1980 album “Diana” featuring “Upside Down” and “I’m Coming Out”), and others. If I’m not mistaken, Nile Rodgers even did music for Madonna herself!

Speaking of “Good Times”, that song alone by Chic has served as the template for many other genres - rap (The Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rappers Delight”), rock (Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust”). Another group that should have been a shoo-in for induction.

By rushing to put Madonna (who, again, only JUST BARELY qualifies for induction based on the 25-year rule) into the R&RHOF and again passing over Donna Summer (who, based on the 25-year rule, became eligible in 2000) and Chic (who became eligible around 2002), the music industry once again shows its current disdain for the true classics and its favoritism for cookie cutter pop fluff.

At least Gamble/Huff & Little Walter are getting in.

Peep this write-up that compliments the “Gamble & Huff” post. Courtesy of the Soul Patrol Newsletter (www.soul-patrol.net). [Chic, more so than Donna Summer meets the *surface requirements* of RRHOF inclusion. I would like to expand upon their accomplishments on the ROCK and ROLL side of things. The single “Good Times” was credited with generating enough income to help Atlantic Records thru a very financially perilous time. Remember the various formats we had then? Cassette. LP. 7 inch single. 12 inch single. Chic sold thru on ALL of them at well over a million units.

CHIC should be in the RRHOF based on their INFLUENCE on ROCK and POP MUSIC. The basic ingredients of the Rock Anchor “Power Trio” were in place: Bernard Edwards: BASS, Nile Rodgers: GUITAR, Tony Thompson: Drums. Time after time we have been reminded these 3 instruments are representative of what ROCK is all about. The SOUND that CHIC made was indeed identified as a TEMPLATE for the following ROCK acts: The POLICE, BLONDIE, DURAN DURAN and later and more importantly INCLUSIVE OF CHIC MEMBERS: POWER STATION. They performed BEYOND their own industry imposed borders. Those borders (for any to need to be reminded) are: Soul and Disco.

As a PRODUCTION ENTITY CHIC produced the following POP and ROCK acts either TOGETHER or SEPARATELY (I purposely left off the Soul/Disco performers Grace Jones, Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Al Jarreau, Jody Watley, etc. to concentrate on the “Rock and Roll” of the RRHOF):

Koo Koo, Debbie Harry (1981)
Carly Simon, “Why” from the motion picture soundtrack “Soup for One” (1982)
Power Station, Power Station (1985)
“A View To A Kill” (single), Duran Duran (1985)
Heat, Nona Hendryx (1985)
Riptide, Robert Palmer (1985)
Cocker, Joe Cocker (1986)
Color In Your Life, Missing Persons (1986)
Hearts In Motion, Air Supply (1986)
Alphabet City, ABC (1987)
If, Hollywood Beyond (1987)
Contact, Platinum Blond (1987)
Out of Order, Rod Stewart (1988)
Under The One Sky, Distance (1989)
YUI Orta, Ian Hunter/The Hunter Ronson Band (1990)
Break The Silence, The Triplets (1990)
Vagabond Heart, Rod Stewart (1991)

The thought process that allows an act like THIS to go un rewarded can ONLY be identified by TWO TERMS and TWO TERMS only: STUPIDITY and RACISM. Leonard Cohen’s influence may indeed be deep, but who did HE ever produce? Did Leonard Cohen rescue a record company from financial straits? There can be no thought process of any consequence if anyone who VOTES at the RRHOF ever paid attention to what is-on the face of it-the accomplishments within the ROCK world of an act like CHIC.

An act like CHIC was responsible for influencing musical SUBSTANCE.

Madonna’s lasting accomplishments were of STYLE over substance.
EXAMPLE: “The Material Girl”…And who produced THAT track……..?

Written by Peter Brown and Robert Rans
Produced by Nile Rodgers
Bass by Bernard Edwards
Guitar, Synclavier II, Juno 60 by Nile Rodgers
Drums by Tony Thompson
Background vocals by Madonna, Curtis King, Frank Simms and George Simms
Even the girl who needed the “Material” knew where to get it.

If only the committee of the Rock and Roll Foundation were as wise….]

MAGNA
Concert Productions International (familiarly, CPI). Major promoter of rock concerts and tours in North America. It was established in Toronto in 1973 as a subsidiary of WBC Productions Ltd by Michael Cohl, William (Bill) Ballard, and Mediagenics Entertainment. CPI-Mediagenics extended its sphere of influence across Canada. CPI=Mediagenics organized many national tours by major rock and pop acts and produced more than 250 concerts and events each year in addition to sporting and theatrical events. With its focus on concert tours, CPI promoted successful tours for the Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Pink Floyd. In 1989 it began to acquire international touring rights for groups such as the Rolling Stones, whose 115-concert Steel Wheels tour 1989-90 in Canada, the USA, Europe, and Japan generated gross revenues reaching an unprecedented $300 million. It also presented artists in several smaller Toronto venues and promoted concerts in other Ontario cities. In 1990 Canadian concerts accounted for about half of some 1000 CPI presentations worldwide.
